Hollow Reality of Community Service
All high school students want to earn community service hours to show universities how they contributed to society or the environment but let's take a realistic look at this. The majority of high school students tend to do community or voluntary service only because they have and to make their applications look better
As our systems have developed, the importance of community service has only increased. Universities want to see students doing extra circular activities that benefit society and the environment. A popular choice to fill out college applications is community service to show them the student's "commitment" to social responsibility.
It's not the same case for everyone, they are high school students who are genuinely passionate about volunteering and helping out their societies and communities but since we are talking about it generally majority of high school students couldn't care less since the reality for many students is that community service is more about fulfilling a requirement and less of a desire or passion.
This type of approach is not beneficial, a new approach should be used which helps students focus on finding their particular area of desire or passion in order to give back to the community or environment in a more meaningful and motivated way.
In conclusion, high school students do the required community service but it is crucial for universities and schools to notice the limitations of this type of approach. By changing the way we approach this requirement we can create a new culture of of service that is awarding and beneficial for everyone.
